Cannot open database, error states "unrecognized database format".

Please help, I have information stored on a disk in my a drive and the
database will not open. The message says "unrecognized database format" .

The only times I have gotten that error were:
1) when I was trying to open a higher version database in a lower version of
Access (i.e. trying to open an Access 2000 database in Access97)
or
2) when the database was corrupted beyond repair.
