cannot open ANY programs

Pat

I am unable to open ANY program on my home computer. Each attempt
yields that it cannot find the ".exe" file for that program. I can't
even get into system restore or internet explorer. Even right clicking
on the desktop to go into the properties does not work. Any
suggestions?

If the above suggestion does not work, apparently you
have a computer virus that has harmed your system files
and will need to perform a "clean install".

It looks like a virus has played its part.

Try the following:

1. Launch Command prompt from Start - All Programs - Accessories.
2. Type the following commands:

cd\windows
copy regedit.exe regedit.com
start regedit.com
3. Now, navigate to and select the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

4. Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane.
5. Delete the current value data, and then type: "%1" %*
6. Close the Registry editor and restart the computer, upate ur Anti-Virus
scanner and clean the virus.

Wwhen I launched the Command prompt and typed in "cd\windows"
then I pressed enter. I got "the system cannot find the path specified."
Should it work on my home computer but just doesn't here at work due to
the network that is used here? I don't have much experience with the MS
DOS prompt.

Thanks for any help.

Pat,

cd\windows without quotes [from the drive where Windows is installed]

or cd %windir%
