Cannot navigate to desktop when moving files

This problem just started and I've spent hours trying to debug... no joy.

When selecting files to move using the "move this file" featue... I can no
longer navigate to the desktop ??? which has always been at the top of the
tree. In the move items dialog box I see all the desktop folders starting
with My docs, My computer, my network places and the desktop folders. The
problem is I can't create a new folder on the desktop from this dialog box
unless you can select the desktop icon, which is no longer listed or
available here.

This problem also exists when using the MS scanner and camera wizard in that
I can't navigate to the desktop in the 'Browse for Folder' dialog box.

I have always been able to selet the desktop in these dialog boxes and then
click create new folder.

I don't know if this is related but... when I right click anywhere on the
desktop there is a very long delay... 45 secs or so. Anywhere else in my
system (XP Pro SP2) is fast and snappy.

I searched for possible topics here and MSKB but found little help.

If anyone has seen this problem or knows what I have done.. please help.

The problem is on two computers one with XP Home and the other with XP
Professional. I encountered the same problem after downloading two Microsoft
security updates:KB908531 and KB911562. My problem seemed to be confined to
Office 2003 Professional where files would save only to My Documents and
nowhere else. When I click the X box to stop the transfer, Office also closes
along with the open document. My fix was to system restore back to my last
known functioning point. Everything was regained. I have also turned off
automatic updates in Windows XP SP2 to keep from reinstalling these updates.

Where did you post too?

For those who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there
are two registry patches to choose from (run either one or the
other) not both:

I've made a "patch" back on Saturday available at:
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains
a REG file which needs to be imported into the registry via double
clicking the contained REG file. You may have to reboot Windows
afterwards.)

or

Kelly has made a patch with exact same functionality available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such
files are at the top of the page.

If you're using a Nvidia video card, you may want to update the driver
for that card: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

In case you're running a Kerio firewall software, please reread
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us cloesly.

Thanks...I followed your tip and the HP fix resolved my problem on one PC.
Still working on the second as it does not have any printer drivers
installed. Hmmm.
