cannot manage page file

hello all:

I am using IBM thinkpad R51, Interl Centrino 1.7 GHz, 768 MB RAM. I
want to limit my swap file size to just 256 MB. But the system is
using around 350 - 400 MB swap file. I limit the minimum and maximum
swap file size to 256 but system still uses more than 256. Then I set
page file to zero, reboot then set it to 256 --- same issue.

Can any one help me to fix this out ?

If the system is using a pagefile of that size, it must do so because that
is what it needs. Let the system manage the pagefile.

Why not leave win to manage, because you have 768mb doesnt neccessarily mean
you can decrease the swap size.

when i have plenty of RAM free why it will go to use swap file ? thats
why i want to decrease swap file.

A couple of months ago, seeing Cagefile.Sys went to 1,500Mb or so after
doubling my memory to 1024Mb, I reset the "Startup & Recovery" setting to
only write a 64k memory dump on failure, and set pagefile to 0. After reboot
Cagefile.Sys was gone, and in this Mce2005 OS, I've had no problems since.

Two issues. Firstly, you're almost certainly looking at the graph labelled
"PF Usage" in task manager. It doesn't mean what you think it does, so just
ignore it. Visit www.outertech.com for a far better tool for monitoring
pagefile use.

Secondly, you're almost certainly wrong to limit your pagefile in this way,
for reasons that are discussed over and over again in these newsgroups and
documented on various pages around the web, but if you insist on doing so
then:
- your idea to set min & max to the size you want is correct. Just ignore
that "PF Usage" graph.

- a more sensible strategy would be to set 256mb as your minimum pagefile
size, and set the max to a far larger number. This will ensure that you only
use the amount you want under normal circumstances, but should your system
ever need more pagefile space it is there ready if needed.

I've got 2Gb of ram in the computer I'm at right now and I still have a
pagefile configured on it. Modern systems are configured to work in a
certain way, and in general terms are far better at managing their affairs
than the average computer user.

You don't know what you are talking about. If what you say is true, which I doubt, then reducing the swap file will merely prevent programs from starting, and maybe prevent an error dialog (not enough memory to show it).

Don't worry about things you are ignorant of.
