My Dell computer came loaded with XP Home Edition but no backup. Dells
"help???" directs you to go to Dell Accessories and select Dell OS Recoverey
Utillity that will direct you on how to make backup CD. When I go to Dell
Accessories, there is no option for this program.

How can I make a backup CD for Windows XP??????
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help with this - I'm assuming that this
is probably a common problem with anyone who has bought a Dell computer
lately.

Yeah they quit giving you recovery CD's (although you can pay extra to get
one or order one when you need it).

new Dell computers do come with a hidden partition, so there's really no
need for a CD. This partition contains MANY hardware diagnotic tools, lets
you run a repair install of your OS, or even format and reinstall from
scratch.

To boot to the repair partition on most newer Dell consumer PC's, just
reboot, press the option key displayed to choose a boot device (F12 I think
it is, I don't have a dell with me) then choose the recovery partition from
the list.

Hope that's informative.

I assume the Dell does have a CD Burner? You might better ask this in
alt.sys.pc-clone.dell.

Note also - Shawn's advise is dangerously misleading. The hidden Ghost
partition on your Dell can ONLY do a destructive rollback to the original
factory state (i.e. will wipe all your files). By no means is it a
substitute for the real Windows CD the utility creates. If necessary, you
can buy one from Dell.

You information is incorrect and dangerously misleading. The hidden
partition on Dells contains a Ghost type image and can only be used for a
destructive rollback to factory condition. It will always reformat and wipe
the users files. Newer Dell's have a utility that can be used once to
create a real (DELL OEM) Windows installation CD.

I've done a repair install on my Dell XPS using the recovery tools, and had
no need to move my personal documents elseware. Of course I have an external
drive that I regularly back up to (or have jobs backup for me regularly), so
I would have been okay either way.

Your reply is baffling. The hidden recovery partition stores an image of
the original drive installation and can only be used for a destructive full
roll back. It simply cannot be used for a repair installation.

This is confirmed in Dell's own information, as well as half a dozen other
sources I just double checked.

Perhaps you used the Dell utilities to fix a problem, but I don't see how
you could have done a repair install. Kudos on your backup practice.
