Cannot logon to Windows 2000

I think I've been hacked. When I logon the wallpaper
loads but then the small window changes from "loading
your settings" to "saving settings" and returns to the
logon/password prompt.

I have tried to start in safe mode but the same thing
happens. Any ideas?

This sounds like one of two things; the drive letter has change from
original install, or the drive permissions have changed.

Did the drive permissions change? Can you connect from another machine and
check Event Viewer for errors?

The machine I'm trying to repair is a laptop. No
connection to any other machines so I have no idea about
drive permissions.
I tried to logon as another user and as administrator.
Not having used either of those accounts in a while it
asked me and allowed me to change the passwords, but
still goes back to the logon screen after trying to logon.

Thanks again
