WINDOWS 2000 LOGON

My WIN 2000 has been setup not to require logon username/password.

I recently used Webroot Window Washer to clean my hard drive free space.
WIN 200 has now defaulted to requiring a logon. The problem is that, as far
as I know, when the system was setup, no usernames/passwords were setup and
this means there is no Administrator password set. Therefore, I cannot logon
and I cannot bypass the logon screen, rendering me unable to get into my
system.

the problem may have been caused by Window Washer, or maybe not -- don't
know really, but am suspicious.

I suspect my only solution is to re-install the OS, but before doing so,
would like to see if there is any other solution around.

Has anyone struck this problem before and is there a viable work round
without re-installing the OS? Microsoft Knowledge Base articles suggest
re-installing might be the only option.

There is always an admin password, even if it set to
a blank. You were prompted for it when you first
loaded Windows. Standard practice is to make a note
of it and to lock that note away. Have you tried
administrator plus a blank password?

If all else fails then you can reset your admin password
to a blank with this boot disk:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
It's scary stuff but it works.

Thank you Pegasus

Your advice was spot on and all is well with my setup.
The problem was that I didn't install the OS in the first place and the tech
who did has moved on, hence I didn't know the password, or indeed if one had
been set. As it turned out, he had left it blank and that was a good thing!
My system is fully restored and operational, with no loss of data, etc.

i'm indebted to you. Thank you.
