System Info: XP Home SP2 configured for one user account w/ a "blank"
password ... SpySweeper and Norton Internet Security used for virus/walmare
protection ... system has been operating fine since Nov. '05.

Problem Info: Cannot log into XP ... bootup stops at Welcome screen but User
name and icon is missing. Restart and Reboot yield same result (Welcome
screen w/out User.) Tried "Classic" logon screen (Ctrl-Alt-Del pressed twice)
using "Admin" and "User" names ... receive an error message stating that
logon could not be completed, etc. Also tried "Safe Mode" bootup (F8) ...
stops at Welcome screen but User name and icon is missing.

What are my options?

Hi,

Have you tried the Last Known Good Configuration yet? Alternately, you could
try the Safe Mode with Command Prompt, then run
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe to open the System Restore GUI and
then roll the system back to a point before this problem began.

I tried the "standard" Safe Mode but since it stopped at the same point
(Welcome screen) I assumed that the other Safe Mode options would perform the
same way.

OK, I'll give those suggestions a try. If they don't fix the problem am I
looking at reinstalling the OS?

Tried the "Last Known Good" option but got same results (stopped at Welcome
screen, no User name/icon.) Next tried the "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"
option ... looked as if it was booting into an old-style DOS mode then
switched into GUI mode and stopped at Welcome screen (again, no User
name/icon.)

What now?
