Cannot log in!

I have just transplanted a hard drive from my brother's old, dead computer
to a new one. He gave me a list of passwords he thought he had used, but
none work. I tried safe mode, but same result. If needed, I will reformat &
re-install,
but I would rather not lose all his data. There is probably room for me to
install a second copy on the same partition, but I would rather not waste
the space. Any thoughts on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Google for "hack XP password".

Did you have to perform a repair installation in order to even get Windows
XP to boot off the old hard disk drive?
