cannot locate files (any)

I decided to run a virusscan using nav corp. edition ver
7.6 with virus definitions updated today (09/29/03). I
did this in safe mode. I did have about 20 files
infected with the SWEN virus. All those files were
quarantined.

After this, upon normal startup, none of the things that
were supposed to load during startup did. when i click
on anything in the task bar, it replies that it cannot
locate the file (the taskbar includes Internet Explorer,
Netscape Navigator, Winamp 2 and 3, and Media Player). I
thought that perhaps the links had broken and said no
prob. When I navigated to the Winamp directory and
attempted to manually start the program, I got the same
message. Even the control panel applets will not work
because they have to run rundll32.

Before you ask the question, I will answer: some programs
do work. notepad will still open, as will microsoft
word. But on the whole, almost everything else is not
accessible (I have not tried most of the programs on this
computer due to the volume present). I can't even open
NAV to view the quarantine. Has anyone ever heard of
this problem? Does anyone have any words of wisdom for
me?

Words of wisdom?

If you had virusscan running in the background, and had up-to-date signature
files, your computer would not have been infected in the first place. After
the infection takes hold, you have to do a manual scan. By then, it's
usually too late.
