Cannot load locally stored profile

that's the message I got when starting up this morning.
(XPpro sp2) During blue welcome screen a window pops up
saying windows cannot load the locally stored profile -
error performing inpage operation then the window changes
to Windows starting with temporary profile, any changes
you make will be lost when you log off.
So - every time I start up I have a brand new windows
offering me a tour of xp, wanting to add hardware (that's
working) and I have to set up an internet connection.
I've tried rebooting, tried system restore (several
times). Only thing that happens is I have to once again
set up my connection. I have not loaded any new hardware
or software recently. Have Nortons and everything was up
to date and clean as of monday.
Any suggestions?

I have had the same problem this morning. I have been able to utlize Larry's
suggestion and created a new user profile, however, I have the same error
again upon startup.

Were you able to resolve the problem ? If so, please explain how ?

I get this message as well, or one real similiar -->

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile: The system has attempted to
load or restore a file into the Registry, but the specified file is not in a
Registry file format." Followed by "Windows has logged you in with a
temporary profile any setting you make will not be saved."

I can log in, but I want my data back from my old user profile! Suggestions!

I'm running Win2000, with SP4, got all the typical updates etc.

Oh, Larry's link is good, but all that tells you is how to create a new user
account.

create a new user and give it rights as a member of the administrators
group.
login as the new user.
create a folder called data on the c: drive so it's c:\data
go to c:\documents and settings\old user name\My Documents where old user
name is the name that has all the data
move the files from the My Documents folder into c:\data
open c: drive in My computer.
create a shortcut
put this on your desktop.
therefore you have access to your old files. you might also check all the
rest of the folders (and do show the hidden files & folders before too) to
see if there's any data you want. move that into c:\data as well.

then, delete the old profile. it's crap, you can't fix it. easier to
recreate the settings on your new user account.
