Cannot Join Domain From Some Subnets

N

Nic Keegan

I am having problems joining a domain from a XP
Professional machine. I am using 2 different subnets,
192.168.7.0 and 192.168.10.0. The domain controller is on
10.0 and I can connect fine to the domain on the 10.0,
when I switch the computer over to 7.0, thats when the
problem starts. I have routing set up on one server and
two other servers are the domain controllers. Before I
added a LMHOSTS file, i would not even get the prompt for
the username and password to join the domain. I added a
LMHOSTS file and now get the prompt. I enter the
administrator and password and come up with the message
"The Following Error Occurred Attempting to join the
domain. The specified server cannot perform the requested
operation." I have tried anything and everything that I
can think of. Please let me know any suggestions. I can
provide more information if needed.

Hi Nic,

The error indicates that there is no connection to Active Directory or DNS
server.

The domain join behavior in Windows XP requires TCP/IP to join an Active
Directory domain by using a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
query to an Active Directory DNS server that holds the SRV record:
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.domainname

ensure that you have connectivity to all mentioned servers.

Sebastjan,

Thank you for the suggestion.
I can see the domain controller because I can authenticate
to it with no problems. If I join the domain on my 10
subnet, and switch the computer to the 7 subnet, it
authenticates to the domain on the 7 subnet with no
problems. The problem is that I can not join the domain
on the 7 subnet. Before I added the LMHOSTS file, I was
getting authentication errors in the Event Logs system
folder when trying to authenticate to the domain on the 7
subnet. Now that I have added the LMHOSTS file, the
errors no longer appear. Is there something that you know
of that I may be missing? If you have any more
suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you,
Nic

Hi Nic,

1. Active Directory and DNS servers are in 10.0 subnet.
2. Between subnet 10.0 and 7.0 is a router (Windows 2000 Server) doing NAT?
Probably?
If above is correct then I would set IP Adresses like
Ip address = x.x.7.x
Subnet mask = 255.255.0.0
gateway = ip of router
dns = ip of router
wins = ip of router
This way dns requests are send to router and then to DNS server on 10
subnet.
So I would ping dns server with that configuration by NAME!!! (Dont forget
to remove IP entry from LMHOSTS)
If so far everything is OK, than try to add this comp to domain. In any case
send me a fedback.
