I do not get an error message. I simply get a window that shows the
updates and says they did not install.

U use XP Pro. I downloaded the updates, disconnected from the
Internet, disabled Norton, Stopzilla and Microsoft Antivirus.

I then tried to install the updates, but they did not install.

I tried without disabling Norton etc. Did not work.

I tried without disconnecting from the Internet. Same result.

I have no idea what to do. I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and
still no help.

Does anyonne know what I can do to get the updates installed. I cannot
install any
XP updates, security or otherwise.

Thanks,
Richard

Before you try to install,go to run, type:services.msc In msc, scroll to
windows installer, double click on it,select auto start from the manual
mode its in,then select "start service".close out msc, install updates.

Thanks for your reply. I followed your instructions, but it still did
not work. The updates are downloaded and on my computer but will not
install. Strange.

I'm having a similar problem. SP2 installed and updated through
mid-September 2005. Now Windows/Update finds that my system needs new
updating software: To use Microsoft Update, you must first install the
latest version of some Windows components.

I click on Download and Install Now. The update downloads, and then I
get the message: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tools (KB892130) -
Updates were unable to be successfully installed.

The Windows Update Log shows error, hr=80240020 and 0x8000704dd and
0x80240020 as errors.

The MicroSoft web site indicates that error 80240020 indicates
"ionteractive user is missing" and SUS_E_NO_INTERACTIVE_USER and Dec
Error Code -2145124320.

I'm at a loss.

Finally, they installed. I contacted MS email support. They
downloaded a program that uploaded my machine info. I heard nothing
back from them, other than an acknowledgment, but when I next
restarted my machine, the Turn Off Machine prompt delayed shutdown
until the 9 updates installed.

Don't know why, but it worked.
