Cannot install windows defender...error 1609

Hi ive tried to install windows defender andit returns an error at
installation: "error 1609 An error occured while applying security settings.
Users is not a valid user or group. This could be a problem with the
package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on the network. Check
your network connection and click retry, or c.." and the rest of the message
i cant read... I uninstalled microsoft antipyware before installing windows
defender. Im running windows xp pro, portuguese version... Can anyone help?

Workaround from Jacek Kolonko:

1. Start -> Run net localgroup Users /add

2. Install WindowsDefender.msi.

3. Start -> Run net localgroup Users /delete

Works for both XP Pro and Home

I have the same error. I am running XP spanish version.

Anyone else having the same problem?

I too had the exact same error code and message on THREE different desktops
and notebooks when trying to install WD - tried installing it on English XP
pro and Danish XP pro(both with sp2 of course) - same result though with the
error code in question! I now hope it works with the below mentioned
work-around:-)
 
Please see KB 915087 for steps to resolve this issue. This is an issue we
are actively working on.

Can't install WD. I gat this message: "The wizard was interrupted before
Windows Defender could be completely installed". Tried and tried several
times. Have Win XP Pro, 512 Mb, P4-1.6 Mhz; removed manually MS Antispyware,
exited McAfee, ZoneAlarm Pro... nothing. Always same message.
