We just purchased this product this week. CANNOT install on Windows XP
machine. Message says that "The System Administrator has set policies to
prevent this installation."
Only one user on computer who is administrator. No problems installing any
other programs. No clue, PLEASE HELP!! Bern :)

Verify that the registry value DisableMSI under the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

is NOT set to 1 or 2 (if it doesn't exist, it will default to 0 for
WinXP or earlier)

If it is set to 1 or 2, change it to 0.

That registry entry is not there. You said if not there, it defaulted to
"0", so I will assume that it is "0". We also checked all the Microsoft
Knowledge base articles, and other online resources. The only reference to
our error message is one regarding Norton Antivirus being installed with a
previous version of Norton Antivirus. My husband is running Norton Antivirus
2002. We checked to make sure that my husband is the administrator, that his
log on has full capabilities, etc. Last week he tried to install the free
trial of streets and trips but the installation failed. I removed the entry
from the downloaded program files folder in the windows folder. I would
really appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks. Bern :)

That'll teach me, I saw the KB article referencing Norton as well. Given
what you've posted, my guess is Norton is the issue even though it is a
later version than mentioned in the article. You might try removing it as
the KB article suggests, also check the Symantec website, www.symantec.com
for issues such as this, they may have a fix or a work around.

There are also removal steps in that Knowledge Base Article.

Removed all of Norton, checked around for other techie advice as well, but
haven't found anyone with this problem yet. Clean Install is a LAST
RESORT!!! Too many other programs collected over time to also reinstall.
Personal files are backed up to CD. I did notice that my computer doesn't
have a c:/windows/installer folder, but my husband's does. His is the one
with the problem. My computer is set to show hidden folders. Any other
suggestions?
Bern :)

If you purchased this recently, you could try calling the Microsoft tech
support number for the product. It should be listed in the manual.
