cannot install IE6

Hi

I uninstalled IE 6 (it kept on crashing) and brought IE back to ver
5.00.3502. Then I ran ie6setup.exe but kept on getting the error:

A previous installation has pending work requiring reboot. You need to
restart your computer to complete that installation before running IE setup.
Set up will now close.

I followed the instructions from the pages below to fix it. But I got the
same error as above.

OS: windows 2000 advanced server

I also tried installing ie5setup.exe for IE 5.5 but got the same error as
above. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks.

If you went though all those steps and still cannot install IE 6, then
something went amiss with it's uninstall in the first place, and you have
mis-matched file versions laying around.

Try this:

Find and remove the Active Setup Log.txt file, if present.
Find and delete the Msdownld.tmp folder, if present.
Find and delete the Iemigrat.dll , if present. (It will be hidden.)
Find and clear out the Windows Update Setup Files folder, if present.
Delete the "IE System Migration" value from the following registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration\100 (if
present)
Reinstall IE and components.

If no joy, repair the version of IE you have (IE 5.0) -

If still no joy, (re)install the latest SP for Win2K -

Then go to Windows Update and get all updates available, the try installing
IE 6.

Also when installing IE, make sure you have nothing else running in the
background, including anti-virus and other security programs.

Thank you for the suggestions. I reinstalled SP3, but the same problem
remained when I tried running ie6setup.exe and ie5setup.exe (for IE 5.5).

With windows 2000 server, once you uninstalled IE6, it reverted back to IE5,
but add/remove programs no longer shows any IE entry in the list for you to
uninstall or to repair.

The IE5 I located on the web is for 16 bit OS and windows 3.1 and windows
95. So it cannot be installed on a windows 2000 machine. Do you have one
available somewhere for windows 2000?

The ie5setup.exe for IE5.5 could not load. I tried to reinstall IE5 using
the windows 2000 server CD, but could not find any option to reinstall it.
Do you know how to do that? Is there a way to try to repair windows 2000
server using the OS CD? Thanks.

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
"Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6"
works on earlier versions of Windows.

Did you uninstall any Win2K Service Packs that had been installed /after/
you'd originally installed IE6 _before_ uninstalling IE6?

Did you go to the bottom of the repair article -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177 - and run
the command there to manually start the IE repair tool?

You can get IE 5 here: http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/

I also want to make sure you did this:

Thank you for the pointers. The command

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

had the error message:
error loading setupwbl.dll, the specified module could not found

Let me try to find it from another machine and copy it over to see if this
will help.

None of the suggestions so far in this news group works yet. I tried to
upgrade the OS but had a problem, the same one that I've had the past couple
of months. Lately I detected that whenever I tried to boot the machine in
safe mode by pressing F8, soon after that the screen would hang. It turned
blue with some cryptic, incomprehensible code, followed by a message telling
me to reboot and to check the system manual. Running upgrade of the OS had
the same problem. After the machine loaded the executables and reboot to
enter Set Up it would hang in the same manner.

I'll try to download those full IE versions and try to see if they will
work. Thanks again to everyone.

I downloaded various versions of IE 5.0, 5.01, 5.5, 6.0 from the URL given
below and extracted the file setuwbv.dll, put it in the \winnt folder, and
ran

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

The three selections below were either greyed out most of the time. Only
once did the "Add a component" choice was enabled.

Add a component
Repair IE
Restore previous Windows configuration

I also tried running various versions of ieXsetup.exe. Either I got the
same error as before telling me to restart the machine, or a message saying
that a newer version of IE is already installed on the machine.

From my recollection, SP 3 was installed right after the initial OS
installation and IE 6 was installed later.

And one assumes you installed SP4 after that: Did you uninstall SP4 before
uninstalling IE6 SP1?
