Cannot install applications

Hello,

I am currently trying to repair a clients computer (Windows XP home)which I
suspect has a virus of some description. The symptons are as follows:

Cannot view Event Viewer
Internet Explorer Windows shut down automatically
cannot install Anti Virus.

It is very peculiar and the reson he called me was because it basically
closes the installer after about the third window. This happens on Norton
Internet Security and PC Cillin?

Very odd and the problem is that I cannot install a virus checker to make
sure it is that!

Anyone have any ideas?

Go to www.security.symantec.com and run the virus checker from their web
site. Most likely if you can't get Norton to work your computer has a
virus.

Hi there

Thanks for the advice - The problem is that I have tried this and whatever
it is that is running shuts down internet explorer before I geta chance to
run the checker!

Do you know of any good does based virus killer which works on windows xp -
as F-Prot only works with 98

Fixed!

The computer had a corrupt Riched20.dll (A rich text formating file) It
appears that this is used by many many applications including install
shield. Replaced it with a working one and the rpoblem has been sorted!
