Cannot insert .bmp file into Word document.

I tried to insert a .bmp image from "My Pictures" folder into a word
document but all I got was a blank square or rectangle with no image.

I pressed "insert" then "picture" and then "from file"and double
clicked on the file in the "My Pictures" folder. I have the same
problem whether I try to insert a .bmp or a .jpg.

Any help would be much appreciated

Look in Tools > Options > View. If "Picture placeholders" is checked, clear
it.
