Windows Movie Maker hangs

Hardware:
Dell XPS 410
2.6 ghz
3 gig ram
871gig free disk space

Software:
Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
sp2

Camera:
have a Sony DCR SR40
w 30gb drive

software that came with camera:
Came with PIXELA ImageMixer software
which i use to save the clips from the camera onto a folder.
They get automatically saved as .mpg

Windows Movie Maker
Version 5.1
Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0
(so it says both version 5.1 and 2.1, i guess they are one and the same)

this is my problem: CANNOT IMPORT INTO WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER: IT HANGS

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

i want to import into collections
File/Import into collections
i go to the directory where i have mpg files
(more later on how those mpgs were created)

i click on an mpg file.

it starts to import

it goes to
'seconds remaining = 0 100%'
and it will just hang there forever

THATS IT. THIS IS MY PROBLEM. I AM UNABLE TO IMPORT

===========================================
how did that mpg file get created?

Real easy:

First of all, it looks like an mpg to me. not an mpeg2

Even though, i suspect it may be an mpg2, but i have no way of knowing.(as
far as i know)

all i know is that other people think this camera/software make mpg2's

for example
<<
I just got a new Sony DCR-SR40. It has a 30GB hard drive a records the
videos captured as MPEG2.
That is the camera i have
It came with Pixela software (ImageMixer for HDD Camcorder)

It doesnt have the software version number or anything like that
But i create the mpg file by using this:
software name: imageMixer MPEG Cutter
I just click on compile when i have edited my clip,
and point to a work folder i have created

simple as that. It creates a file with .mpg

So, is that an mpeg2? Who knows? looks like an .mpg to me! not an mpeg2,

i displayed properties and all that. nothing says mpeg2

and so thats that

I go to windows movie maker, try to import it into collections

and it starts and goes reasonably fast till it gets to 100% and then it just
hangs
there forever

its not a big file

the one i tried to do just now is 81,392 KB (under TYPE in win explorer, it
says 'MPEG Video')

= = = = = =

Oh, and i already tried something, and of course it did not work:

I downloaded Windows Media Encoder

so i could just take these mpg files and convert them to wmv or whatever
format

But that did not work for me! Windows Media Encoder Plain crashes when i
set the
from and to files to be converted. But this question is not even about
windows media encoder

it is about what i described before. I CANNOT IMPORT A .mpg FILE INTO
WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER

i suspect it has to do with codecs.

any ideas?

MPEG2 files that don't go into Movie Maker should be converted to other file
types that do.... see my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video >
MPEG-2 page.

Not a direct answer to your question, but...I successfully use Windows Media
Encoder to convert my .mpg files to .wmv. I did find that WME did not like
two pass VBR audio encoding and stopped with the error 0xC00D0BC3; if you
are getting this error, change your audio encoding to something like "CD
quality CBR". This is what I use and it gives good results to get my .mpg
files to .wmv and thence into Windows Movie Maker.
