After installing Office 2003, I cannot hear any more the sound of powerpoint
presentations.
Previously, with Office 2000 + Outlook 2003 it was ok
( for same presentations also ).
Microphones are ok, external videoclips have sound ok, web sites also.

How can this be corrected ?

Hi Glen,

My installation is a corporate one, not a private one, so they reinstalled
Powerpoint
but this didn't help.
Also, trying to download & install office updates failed.

In the meantime, I tried to save the presentations as *.htm and also as *.mht
files.
Opening them in the browser, plays the sound prefectly.

Only the Powerpoint viewer has problems.

As I understand after many hours of web browsing, there are big problems using
Office2003 with Win2000, so, if this were my choice, I'd prefer not to upgrade
at all.
Sad to say, but Microsoft is very difficult to understand when it comes to
solving
problems. Therefore, on my home computer, I strongly prefer to remain with
my old good WIN98 + Office97, where sounds work, a.s.o.
I don't need any new troubles for a long, long time ahead.

Thanks a lot for your help and for any other ideas to solve the problem.

My best regards,
Iudith Mentzel

Hi,

I appreciate your frustration. If your installation is corporate, you most
likely won't be ale to install updates or service packs yourself.

If you like, I would be happy to look at the mht file and see if I can
replicate it. Please feel free to email the mht file to me. Also, have you
tried round tripping? I'm thinking that if the sound plays in html, but not
the viewer, round tripping might fix any issue.

Hi Glen,

Thanks a lot for your answer.
As per your kind request, I just e-mailed you an *.mht file created
following the round-trip indications, but still without success.

Thanks again for your kind cooperation !

My best regards,
Iudith

I don't think that round tripping works with .MHT files. I believe you have to
publish to an HTM/HTML file

Hi Michael,

Round-tripping by itself works with both *.mht and *.htm, that is, I can
save from
Powerpoint and re-open in powerpoint with both of them.

The problem is only that in the web browser (IE6) both *.mht and *.htm have
the
sound ok, whilst in powerpoint no one of them has any sound heard
( as the original *.pps doesn't have ).

I think this is a "powerpoint inside bug", something very "internal" to the
powerpoint
itself, which refuses to play the sounds that do appear in its own
definitions property
pages.

I wonder how Microsoft didn't publish an explanation to this up to now.
Their suggestion is something similar to the round-trip, but without
converting to
*.mht or *.htm back and forth, but it also doesn't help.

Thanks & Best regards,
Iudith

If you have not applied Service Pack 1 to Office 2003, many things may not work.
Please tell us more about the problem you encountered when trying to go to Help

Hi Sonia,

First, I should tell you that my installation is a corporate one and I'm
forbidden to
perform any installations by myself.

But, anyway, when one of the technical team members tried to perform a
"Check for
updates", as you indicated, we received an error page saying:
"Office Update is unable to check for updates", located at the following URL:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010404541033.aspx

At this point, they left the issue and promissed me to pass it on to one of
the more
competent persons to deal with it ( but, as I underlined, such an issue is
far from
beging appreciated as top-most important for anyone ... ).

I totally agree with you that without these updates "many things do not work".

Together with this, I cannot stop thinking that the Office pack, maybe more
than
any other software nowadays is meant to be used by a very wide population,
most of them not computer specialists, and it is very frustrating when they
have
to call somebody each moment to solve problems of ( in fact ) a new product,
almost immediately after just having installed it.

I feel this frustration by myself, although I'm a software applications
programmer,
but not specifically a Microsoft guru ( or an installations guru ).
Therefore, I'm aware that doing things you don't totally understand can cause
more damage than result, and, from my experience, this happens almost always.
I myself have a large collection of descriptions of such situations.

But, unfortunately, those that ARE specialists in these fields, are not
always aware
of the different updates or additions that they should perform along with
the basic
installation. I cannot say definitely whether they are expected to be aware,
or,
rather should be repeatedly notified by Microsoft.

Sorry for this long philosophy, I always wish I could solve the problems by
myself,
without disturbing others (just as I do in my own field), but in many cases
this
does not work as I wish.

Thanks always for your readiness to help !

My best regards,
Iudith

Please put pressure on your IT folks to get Service Pack 1 applied to all
installtions of Office 2003 in your shop. The page you cited explains the
reasons why the update check failed, and includes steps that should be taken.
You will continue to have problems unless the Service Pack is applied.

Hi Sonia,

I totally agree with you, I'll try to follow your advice.

You know, in our places it's not enough to be right, you need somebody to
afford this to you ...
.... and also to be enough of a VIP so that your pressures to be useful...

Thanks a lot,
Iudith

Hi,

I have done some testing on the file in PowerPoint 2003, Internet Explorer
and the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer. Thanks, by the way, for sending it as it
helps enormously with finding what is wrong!

Sound works in all cases. I would follow what Sonia and others have said.
You need to tell your IT people that you need an update for 2003.

Hi Glen,

Finally, the Service Pack was installed on my computer, as per your and
Sonia's indications, but unfortunately it did not solve the problem.

Today one of the IT persons here started to check the issue, and what is
intersting
is that the sound of the same presentation works ok on his computer, which
he says
has the same version of Office 2003 !

Now I really don't know what to think of, I left him with the problem to
continue to
study it.

Thanks again and My best regards,
Iudith

In Powerpoint viewer I cannot hear the sound in the powerpoint, I got this
on an email, now what?

In Powerpoint viewer I cannot hear the sound in the powerpoint, I got this

Chances are that the audio was:

1) Not inserted correctly to allow for embedding
2) included, but not correctly linked
3) linked correctly but not included
4) included and linked correctly, but from a path that is too long
5) attempting to play using corrupted mci player settings

You may need for the person that sent you this presentation to send along
the sound file. You can also have them read:
**Sounds/Movies don't play, images disappear or links break when I move or
email a presentation

Hi Bill,

First of all, I should mention that the problem still persists.

I'm sure that all the powerpoint presentations I'm talking about are perfectly
correct, they do work ok in Powerpoint2000 and Powerpoint 97,
the problem is only with Office2003, where the sound is not heared.

The problem occurs only on my computer, on others' computer, with the
same Office2003, the same presentations work ok, with sound ok.

The conclusion is that the Office2003 installation on my computer maybe
encounters some conflicts with other installed software, so what could
still be tried is reinstalling all the software of the computer, which is very
problematic for the moment, so we put the whole thing aside, without a
solution.

Thanks anyway for your suggestions.

Best regards,
Iudith Mentzel

I don't think this is the case, since you have the full Office 2003
installed, but look at:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00657.htm
-and-
http://www.soniacoleman.com/FAQs/FAQ00198.htm
to see if these apply to you.

Also, if you save the .ppt file to the root c: directory does the file play?
if so, look at #4 again. There is a limit to how long the combined path and
filename can be for the sound files. If they exceed this limit (a bit over
220 characters if I recall correctly) then the sound file will not play in
2003.

What file association are you using for the ppt/pps files? Do you have them
open in the viewer or the full version? If they open in the viewer, you may
want to re-associate the file extensions with PowerPoint directly.

Just a few ideas.
