Powerpoint 2002 files lose sound in Powerpoint 2003

I recently upgraded from Office/PPT 2002 Professional to Office/PPT
2003 Professional. I also created a new multimedia presentation in PPT
2003, which I converted to DVD using Camtasia Studio 4. It took me
several attempts to create a successful DVD and in the process,
Powerpoint crashed repeatedly following the "Record" phase of
Camtasia Studio 4.

After creating the DVD, Powerpoint was misbehaving so I decided to
de-install and re-install Office 2003. I did so and noticed a
difference during installation. Instead of an upgrade option... from
02 to 03, I only had custom, express or standard install options... but
so what?? After re-installing Powerpoint 2003, I noticed that none of
my earlier presentations, originated in PPT 2002, on same computer,
would play sound... neither .wav nor mp3. The .avi files play but
without sound.

I have spent days trying to track down this problem without success.
To add insult to injury, after doing a presentation at the high school,
I can't find my copy of MS Office 2002. Now I can't de-install and
reinstall 2002 then upgrade to 2003. I have several years worth of
multimedia presentations that will no longer play sound! How do I fix
this? I am going nuts!

Hi Dee
Start by making sure that you have service pack 2 on your 2003 (check in
help > about powerpoint)

If no then download it (help > check for updates)

Service Pack 2 and all current updates for MS Office have been
installed. All sound files associated with now mute presentations play
on PPTs media player mplayer2.exe. When I try to play or edit sound
object within presentation, I receive and error message, "MCI
Error--The specified file will not play on the specified MCI device...
"

Could you have installed a program that could have altered the mci
associations eg a music player, a video editor?

If you suspect this try reinstalling the latest version of windows media
player 11 which usually resets things.
