All embedded sounds stopped playing in PowerPoint

All of a sudden the embedded songs I have in personal PowerPoint
presentations will not play, nor will any presentations sent to me.
Everything used to work, and suddenly they no longer do. I am running Office
2003 on a Windows XP platform. The same files work fine on other computers
in the house (which are all networked). I also cannot add songs to slides
and hear them, but I can add sounds like "applause" and they play. How can I
fix this?

Do WAV files play on your computer in general?

What's changed in the past <however long> -- since songs did play and now
don't? Installed any software? Updated antivirus programs? Added a firewall?
Anything like that?

I haven't used PowerPoint for a while, and so I am sure that I have added things since I last used it. I am confused, because everything else relative to songs and sounds appears to work just fine -- except for hearing them in PowerPoint. I tried to repair the program, but that didn't work either.
