Cannot get VPN to work

I am setting up my first VPN. Server on desktop works fine. Client on laptop
also works just fine. If I connect the laptop to the LAN then the VPN to the
desktop works fine. The problem is when I try to set up the VPN from the
Internet it will not connect.

I suspect the problem must lie within the router and/or firewall. I am
using an Office Connect 3CRWDR 100Y-72 Router and Zonealarm in both
computers. I have been messing with both things but no luck. I have tried
stopping Zonealarm but no go. I have tried opening ports on the router and
even the DMZ but nothing works.

What can I do now?

Do a simple test. Can you telnet port 1723? Check these search results,

Wow, what a coincidence. I was just checking in to say that, after much,
fumbling around, I finally determined the problem was not with the host side
but with the client side and it turned out to be Zonealarm. I am not sure of
the exact cause but if I set the Internet zone to medium security, instead of
high, then the VPN connects and works.
