Cannot get past logon screen

HELP!!! I cannot get past the logon screen. I enter my
user name and password and it goes to logon and just stays
there. It does not log on and does not give me any
errors. Once in awhile (afer 5 min or so) it will just
return to the logon screen, otherwise it just
stays "trying to log on".

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Try booting up in Safe Mode (press F8 during the boot stage).
