Cannot get MS Fax to use a calling card

We use a calling card for our long distance calls. I have added the calling
cards number, pin and all the other dialing sequence info and have it set up
to be used on long distance calls. But when I try to send a fax long
distance, fax is unable to use the calling card. I get an instant "error
sending fax" message which repeats for the allowed amount of retries. And,
yes, I am using the correct "canonical format."

I did find a thread once that mentioned that a service needed to be started
for fax to use the calling card dialing rules. But it was unclear and I had
run out of time to further investigate it. Now I cannot relocate that thread.

Here's the problem you may be seeing and a solution for Windows 2000 that
DOES NOT WORK for Windows XP because the XP Fax Service can only run under
the System account:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239888
Fax Service Does Not Use Dialing Rule Calling Card Information

What you can do is create a new location and set your calling card info into
one of the "To access an outside line" boxes. Cumbersome, but it works.

Thank you for the reply. It doesn't seem to work, and I'm still confused.

Under the "Fax Service Does Not Use Dialing Rule Calling Card Information"
it says to have the service start under an administrator account. There is
only one account on the machine (besides all the automatically created ones)
and we are labelled as a "computer administrator". Under that kb it said
that both the dailing rules and the fax service need to be running under a
login with administrator rights, which our one log in is. What am I miss
understanding?

Also, when I tried to set the fax service log in to our account
specifically, it could not restart due to a log in error.

That's because the article applies to Windows 2000, it does NOT work on
Windows XP. What you can do is create a new location and set your calling
card info into one of the "To access an outside line" boxes. Cumbersome,
but it works.

Hal:

You mentioned adding this information to the "To access an outside line" box
in the General tab.

Correct me if I am wrong, but are not these fields used for Prefix dialing
only?

Calling card option is used for suffix dialing, such as entering a pass code
or pin after entering the long distance number.

Or are you referring to another set of keystrokes to enter in these fields
that will produce this type of dialing?

Thanks for your help,

Javier

With calling cards, you call the calling card access number first and dial
your destination number within the calling card interface. So one could put
that access number or one of the dial-around prefixes in the to access an
outside line for long distance, call box.

I have the same issue. How exactly do I put the dialing steps all on one
line? Is there a character set to use? This seems to be the only thread on
the net. MS has a fix for win2000 but not winxp.

Hey Mr. Hostetler, This sounds like a sweet workaround, but how do I input a
pause so I can dial both the calling card number, pause, and pin number
before the actual fax number? Hopefully you are still answing on this post.
It is kind of old.
Thanks in advance

For pauses, use commas. Each comma adds a 2-3 second delay, so add enough
commas between the calling card number and the PIN number to get the amount
of delay you need.
