CANNOT get an ElTorito Disk

E

Emanuil ACHIM

Hi all,

I tried many ways to make a bootable CD (from some books, MSDN, Slobodan's
example in this NG), but whatever I did, after FBA I cannot get a recognized
ElTorito Disk. In FBALOG.TXT in place of:
....
Disk0 signature = 0xC4B6C4B6.
Disk1 signature = 0x4F544C45.
Disk1 is an ElTorito disk.
.....
I found:
....
19:59:03 PM - Found 3 Hard Disks.
19:59:03 PM - Searching for El Torito disk.
19:59:03 PM - Disk0 signature = 0xC4B6C4B6.
19:59:03 PM - Disk1 is raw.
19:59:03 PM - Failed to get disk1 signature, error = 0x15.
19:59:03 PM - Checking Start value in
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\redbook key.
19:59:03 PM - Resetting Start value.
19:59:03 PM - Checking Start value in
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Imapi key.
....

An El-Torito PnP driver was loaded:
....
19:56:43 PM - [FBAAddDevInstanceId]
ELTORITO\ELTORITODISKDEVICE\1&2AA0FFE4&0&0000
....
and EWF seams to be OK (ends with status 0x0).

WHY ??? I do not understand what's going wrong . I boot from the HDD and
the PreFBA CD is in the CD-ROM. I don't find any discussions about this
problem. If this is important: I use Nero 5.5.10.35 to burn a RW CD .

Thanks,
Emil

Hi,

Can you tell us exact steps that you used when creating "PreFBA CD is in the CD-ROM".
For some reason this is not an El-torito CD or does not have valid ELTO signature.

Best regards,
Slobodan

Hi Slobodan,

Last time I created the CD in this way:

1. In TD created the image (like in XPE Step by Step - JB Cseri described)
2. Copy the image files (from development PC ) to the target PC (it has more
partitions, first is for the image, FAT primary and active)
3. Start the target PC with XPPro (on another partition).
4. Made an image file from the first partition with hd2iso
5. Copy the file to the dev. PC and burn the image file on the CD.

That's all.

By the way I just test such a solution and at this time I have no "Run-time
Image Licensing", so this field in Settings is empty. Could be this a
problem ?

Thanks,
Emil

I did it again and again, but at the end the same result. Another
information: each time I made the image file (with NERO, point 7 in your
description) I get the following message: "There has been a possible read
error during the operation, which may result in a defective write. Do you
wish to continue the write anyway ?"

And one more question: if I disable the EWF, how you wrote, how can I see if
the device was recognized as El-Torito device ? This information is no more
in the FBALOG.TXT ? Can be a trouble the german OS ? (e.g. is a trouble for
User settings like "Run on start" etc.)

Thamks a lot anyway for your answers,
Emil

For some reason this is not an El-torito CD or does not have valid ELTO

Hi all,

I tried many ways to make a bootable CD (from some books, MSDN,
Slobodan's
example in this NG), but whatever I did, after FBA I cannot get a
recognized
ElTorito Disk. In FBALOG.TXT in place of:
...
Disk0 signature = 0xC4B6C4B6.
Disk1 signature = 0x4F544C45.
Disk1 is an ElTorito disk.
....
I found:
...
19:59:03 PM - Found 3 Hard Disks.
19:59:03 PM - Searching for El Torito disk.
19:59:03 PM - Disk0 signature = 0xC4B6C4B6.
19:59:03 PM - Disk1 is raw.
19:59:03 PM - Failed to get disk1 signature, error = 0x15.
19:59:03 PM - Checking Start value in
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\redbook key.
19:59:03 PM - Resetting Start value.
19:59:03 PM - Checking Start value in
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Imapi key.
...

An El-Torito PnP driver was loaded:
...
19:56:43 PM - [FBAAddDevInstanceId]
ELTORITO\ELTORITODISKDEVICE\1&2AA0FFE4&0&0000
...
and EWF seams to be OK (ends with status 0x0).

WHY ??? I do not understand what's going wrong . I boot from the HDD
and
the PreFBA CD is in the CD-ROM. I don't find any discussions about
this
problem. If this is important: I use Nero 5.5.10.35 to burn a RW CD .

Thanks,
Emil

Hi,
And one more question: if I disable the EWF, how you wrote, how can I see if
the device was recognized as El-Torito device ?

Yes you can check in registry HKLM\System\MountedDevices and look for some diskid that begin with ELTO signature in first four bytes
represented in hex.

Slobodan

Yes you can check in registry HKLM\System\MountedDevices and look for some
diskid that begin with ELTO signature in first four bytes
represented in hex.

Yes I find this key (when I work as you wrote) in the registry, but if I
burn the second CD and boot from it, I get the blue screen with the
information like:
....
bla, bla, bla
....
STOP: 0x000007B (0xF0E4B640,0xC0000034,0x0000000,0x00000000)

( that's very ... microsoftly ;-)) )

and as I understood, that means that a critical boot device is missing from
the configuraton, probably the El-Torito, but who knows ...
I'll gonna give up, it make no more sense, I lost a few weeks with the
El-Torito and no results.

Thanks a lot again,
Emil

Hi Emanuil,

If you have found some volume that begin with ELTO then your el-torito is working.
IF EWF was not working you would have other error.
So read about the 7B error problem in my thread I mentioned it.

Just for a test, use your El-torito CD that you think it should work and try it on few different computer types (different BIOS-es).
If it is working then you have problem with BIOS.
I have same problem on Intel's 875 motherboard.
BTW if your first CD from XPe tools or Windows Installation can boot from CD this means nothing since they are using completely
different approach for booting from CD than XPe.

Slobodan

Hi Slobodan !

IT WORKS !!! IT WORKS !!! YEAH .... The problem was a stupid check box on
the NERO application. Wenn you burn the final CD you must check "Finalize CD
(No further writing possible)" and then it works perfectly. Very strange (or
maybe is not), but that was the reason for the 7B error (I worked with
hd2iso - tool). The same image I burned with the unchecked box, if I boot
from it, it goes into the 7B error, if I burned it with the checked box,
works perfectly.

Thanks a lot again for your help !!!

Best Regards,
Emanuil
