Cannot find server

Have Windows XP pro. Have installed IIS 5.1 but when I
use IE 6.0 and enter http://localhost, I get message
Cannot find server
If I am in FP2002 and try to open the website on local
server, I get the computer icon showing the connection
trying to be made but nothing ever results.
I can browse to Inetpub/wwwroot/webfile and view it.
If I go to Administrative Tools =>Microsoft Sharepoint
Administrator, it just hangs and fpadmdll.dll shows up in
address bar and get "Page can't be displayed" message
I can go to Server Extensions Administrator and obtain
page though.

Can anyone help me to resolve problems with local server?
Thanks in advance.

No 127.0.01 does not work. I have IIS installed
(correctly?- don't know) but have never been able to bring
up web. Can browse to website. I think I am hung up in
Windows XP security. I found something about having TCP/IP
installed first. Well I tried to install simple TCP/IP.

I am so confused. I thought I would be able to test
changes on PC server before Publishing out to web. I feel
more confused than ever. The two FP books I have talk
little about PWS and are not helpful.

I feel like an idiot because I can find much on newsgroups
addressing similar problems. I must be making something
difficult.

Anonymous and confused!

FWIW, my first inclination - were I experiencing this problem - would be to
ensure both TCP/IP and IIS were installed properly:

- turn off virus scanner **
- uninstall IIS (add/remove programs, under the windows apps)
- uninstall simple TCP/IP
- reboot
- reinstall TCP/IP
- reboot
- configure additional TCP/IP settings in IE (if needed by system)
- reinstall IIS
- reboot
- ensure virus scanner is running
- open command window (start/run/cmd)
- ping localhost
- ping www.yahoo.com
- start browser & ensure you can get to the web
- and if all is well, start frontpage.

** I'm behind my own firewall, so am confident I can live without the virus
scan for this operation.

Hi Randy,

I have the same problem, almost.

When I open FP, I get "cannot find server at <computername>. Please check
to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are
set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server
may be temporarily out of service"

I followed the instructions you list below. All worked fine, including
pinging localhost <1ms, and pinging www.yahoo.com.

I'm running Win XP Pro, IIS 5.0 and FPSE2000 (that comes with XP/IIS). Oh,
and FrontPage 2000 upgrade from FP98.

Machine is new, I've moved from Win2K Pro, to Win XP Pro and have not been
able to get this working properly yet.

My FP web has a FPSE based shopping cart. It doesn't work, which implies
that the server extensions are not working, but checking them in the MMC
shows them to be in good order and operational.

I'm lost. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Brett Anderson
