Cannot find file error

Clayton

Product- MS Office 2000 SR-1
OS- Windows 98

When I open Excel and navigate to a Excel (XLS) file, I
have no problem opening the file. But if I open "My
Computer" or Microsoft Explorer" and navigate straight to
the file and double click on the file, Excel does open but
after a second or two I get this error.

Cannot find file c:\windows\desktop\filename.xls (or one
of it's components) Make sure the path and filename are
correct and that all required libraries are available.

I re-installed with no help, I re-associated XLS files and
I also unchecked the DDE box under file association that I
found on another tech help site. All file paths are under
218 characters also.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Clayton

Try this first

Tools>Options>General uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1 ) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
(unregserver is not always needed)
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

Ron,
Thanks, that sounds like great advice, I will try this on
Friday. That's the next time I am at the customers site. I
will keep you informed.
