opening Excel files from desktop

about 6 months ago Excel closed from errors generated when the copy tab to
another workbook command was used. upon reboot, could no longer open Excel
files from desktop; had to be inside Excel to open file. If attempting to
open from desktop would get error message: "cannot find the file 'C/Documents
and Settings/Administrator/Desktop/Work/Excel Workpapers/filename.XLS (or one
of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all
required libraries are available". Tried reinstalling the Registry, didn't
work. Tried Excel problem solver, didn't help. Tried reinstalling Small
Business, did'nt help. Am using Excel 5.0 under Windows Professional 2000 on
an IBM laptop. How do I fix this?

You need to go to a window explorer and look under Tools folder Options.
Select File types XLS. Press Advance and OPEN - EDIT. compare these setting
witth somebody who computer properly opens the files.

the application to openline should point to the c:\Program Files directory.
It looks like yours got changed to Documents and Setttings.

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.
