cannot find address. make sure path or internet address is correc

I am running XP for home, SP 2, IE 6.0. and get this message whenever I type
www.anything.com. If I type http:// it works, but never for the short
address. It's more of an irritation than anything but what steps must be
taken to correct this. It didn't use to be this way so it's something I've
triggered, but I don't know what.
