cannot file shell.dll

Posting this for my niece since her pc is not healthy.

She is running xp home ed. Using AVG anti-virus free edition (no tech
support).
AVG notified her of several trojan horses. Scanned pc with AVG which
removed 2 trojan horses. Moved several more to virus vault. She deleted the
infected files from the virus vault without knowing what they were.
Decided to download McAfee free from aol. Aol said remove any other virus
programs first. Tried to uninstall AVG but got error message "cannot find
shell.dll"
Did trojan horse cause this, or did she possibly delete the file? How can
it be fixed?
Please help, not very computer savvy.

Try Start > Run > sfc /scannow

Let that run and have your original XP media ready. T

This scan will look at all system files and restore corrupt / faulty ones.
