"Cannot fild file for slide #x" error message

I am creating powerpoint files in Open Office. When I try to show them in
Powerpoint Viewer (either 2003 or 2007), I get two error messages. THe first
is a warning about clicking on links that might have viruses. After clicking
through that, I am told that Powerpoint cannot find the slide for file #24
etc. And so I can't move to the linked slide in my powerpoint presentation.

Is there any way to disable these messages? I can show them in Open Office
Impress, but I'd rather use Powerpoint Viewer. I tried a small utility that
has been suggested on an Office MVP site, to get rid of the warning about
viruses, but that didn't work. But my main concern is not being able to
navigate, by clicking on links.

I would suggest you use PowerPoint to create PowerPoint presentations to use
the PowerPoint viewer.

OK, that's a great idea. But until I shell out the $150 for Office 2007 Home
version, I'll still need to work with Open Office.

Is there any other workaround?

What do the links point to? Other slides in the same presentation or external
files or embedded objects of some kind?

How large are the PPT files and do they contain proprietary/sensitive material,
or can you share them with us?

I think that supplies a fix for PowerPoint itself but not for the free Viewer.

Ah, I misunderstood, I thought you had PowerPoint and were doing some sort
of conversion. As the viewer is very limited and there isn't much in the
way of "settings" I don't know of anything you could do to alter what you
are getting unless its in Impress.

Steve, no sensitive material here. In fact, I wish more folks would access
this! :)

Here's a link:

The links point to other slides within the ppt slideshow. Its structured as
a jeopardy game--the first slide is the game board, where I have students
select a subject and point value. I click on the appropriate cell, and its
suposed to take me to a question that is on a slide linked to, in that game
board. It works in Open Office Impress, but I'd rahter use the powerpoint
viewer if I could--only in the ppt viewer do clicked links turn a different
color. OO Impress doesn't have that feature.

As a matter of fact, I do have access to a computer with Office 2003 on it.
When I downloaded the slideshow from my site and opened it up in Powerpoint
2003, the links wouldn't work at all. I didn't get any error message, but it
was as if each of the links on that first page weren't even there. I opened
that same file in OpenOffice, and the links worked. I guess OpenOffice is
using some method that isn't even recognized by Powerpoint. There's not much
use to saying that your software can make .ppt files if Powerpoint itself
can't even use those files properly.

First suggestion (one that's utterly irrelevant to the current problem):
Never use spaces in files/directories that'll be uploaded to the web.
They may not cause problems in some circumstances but sooner or later they'll
leave toothmarks on your hide. Substitute underscores for them if you like.

Try clicking on the "button" shape rather than the text. Impress seems to have
created two links, one on the text and one on the shape itself. The one on the
shape works. As long as you don't click directly on the text, you're good to
go.

Great. That (the part I quoted below) did it. Just to clarify, when I click
on the background in each cell, the link works. Its only when I click on the
TEXT or number in the cell, that I get that error message. I wouldn't have
dreamed that in a million years, that this would be the case. Thanks again.
