Cannot Encrypt Files

I right click on a folder I want to encryp. Select properties, then
advanced. Then I can see the encryption option check box but it's disabled
so I can't click it. How do I enable it?

File encryption is available with Windows XP Professional
as long as the hard drive is formatted NTFS. If you are using
Windows XP Home Edition, file encryption is not available.

What you describe is the type of behavior exhibited by Windows
XP Home Edition. Encryption is not available in that version of
XP. File encryption is available in XP Professional.

Just out of curiosity, how familiar are you with encryption and
its proper use? These newsgroups are littered with sad stories
from users who encrypted their files and later lost access
because they didn't fully understand what they were getting
into.

Thanks to both of you for putting me straight. I have got win xp home on my
notebook. It's a dell, I have actually got a win xp pro cd with coa etc but
I'm scaed to try installing it on my notebook as I'm uncertain if I need any
drivers etc. So I'll just stick to xp home for now.

Thanks again

Martin
