Cannot download updates

I have xp and am set to download updates automatically. But they are not
downloading and I think they are being blocked by either my Sygate firewall
or Windows firewall. I tried disabling these to get downloads and was hit
immediately with a crash! Please can someone advise me how to safely set
these firewalls to allow ms downloads? Thanks in advance for any help.

Check to see if your firewalls are set to notify you when they block
something. Then when the warning pops up, you should be able to allow the
downloads.
