Cannot download and/or install recent urgent/critical Windows Updates?

I can't get my OS to access and/or download recent Windows Updates. I'm
running Windows XP SP2. I have automatic update turned on but when I
did a search of all recent updates, the last one was like Aug. 2005!!!

So I went to the Microsoft website and tried to search for available
updates. I chose the Express update option. When it scanned my computer
for urgent needed updates I got a message saying something like "The
files needed to update are no longer registered or available" or
whatever. And I had the option to either install or register the needed
files. So of course I click to tell it yes. No Go. It fails and brings
me back in a complete circle right back to the beginning.

It's like one complete loop. I go check for updates, scan for them, get
error message stated above, click to install or register and then it
fails and brings me right back to the page telling me to do and express
or custom scan/install.

I have 3 firewalls. One in Windows XP - turned off completely. Never
use it. ZoneAlarm (w/no AV protection) and I turned this off completely
before trying. And 2006 Symantec Firewall and AV/AS. Which I also
disabled completely prior to trying to update.

This all came about when last week I downloaded and installed the new
IE7. It installed Ok but after downloading and installing (and just
before reboot) it said that certain updates were not able to be
installed and that I after rebooting I should select tools,
windows(microsoft) update. That's when I did the search on most recent
successful urgent/critical updates and discovered this problem.

Any ideas? I can't figure out what is going on?

If you click the following link, Outlook Express might open and you can
access this group from there. It's the free MS server, but accordingly,
only has MS subjects listed:

THANKYOU JOE!!! I think I found my answer!!!

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to
fix the problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

| My hard drive failed, and I've had to reinstall everything. Update
used to
| work fine, but now I am in a loop. I get this message
|
| Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed
| on your computer. To continue:
|
|
| Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
| Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the
problem
|
|
| I select register or reinstall, it goes thru a process and I get to
the
| screen where I again select Express, and it gives me the above
message again.
| I'd appreciate any advice.
