Cannot detect scanner

D

Dave Lundie

I recently bought a new computer with Win xp.After set up
the scanner worked well. Then Iwanted to use Page Manager
and Copier so installed my old drivers. Then wnt to Acer
Peripherals and downloaded their latest driver. When
installing I got the message not signed by microsoft but
after enquiring from Acer I continued installation. My
miroscan programme works well but now if I try to use the
XP scan programme I get the message cannot detect the
scanner. I have tried to install by first uninstalling
morscan and allowing XP to detect new hardware but this
wizard now also gives the message that the driver has not
been signed. How can I get back the original XP driver?

You do not mention what scanner model you are using, but from your
description I'm imaging you are using an Acer scanner that is support on XP.
It sounds like you are confusing TWAIN with WIA driver compatibility. The
two don't usually co-exist.

If you just want the scanner to "work", you'll want to:
1. disconnect the device from the computer
2. reboot your computer and then make sure any Acer programs are not running
when you start-up (check Task Manager)
3. uninstall any software that applied to the Acer scanner
4. reboot
5. once you've logged in, and for the Acer scanners listed:
Acer Acerscan 1240UT
Acer Acerscan 310
Acer Acerscan 320
Acer Acerscan 5100
Acer Acerscan 620
Acer Acerscan 640
Acer Acerscan 640BT
Acer Acerscan 640BU
Acer S2W 3300
Acer S2W 4300 (16v)

just plug the scanner back into your computer and the inbox XP driver
solution (provided by Acer, I might add) should install automatically.

If you want to use Acer's TWAIN driver (sans all there software which I
think will only work with their TWAIN driver package), you must first goto
device Manager and remove the inbox WIA driver. Then install the Acer
package. Once you've done this though, the Scanner and Camera Wizard is
useless for you (because XP can only enumerate WIA drivers).

If your scanner is not one of the models listed above, but don't want to use
Acer's TWAIN driver, use the Windows Catalog (START -> All Programs and near
the top) while online and see if Acer submitted a signed WIA driver.

good luck!
