cannot delete files

I am a windows xp pro user, and I can not delete many of
the media files on my computer. Sometimes I cant delete
files that arent media files either. It happens mostly
with large files, but sometimes even with very small files.
The preview pane is off.

When I try to delete a file I get the message file is in
use by another person or program. please try again
later. File sharing is disabled and it doesnt work when
Im not on the lan anyway. Even in safe mode i get this
message. Safe mode command prompt will work, but that
requires a restart and I dont think I should have to
reboot ever time I want to delete a file.
Ive also tried deleteing from command prompt and from an
ftp server I set up, with no sucess.

I run Win98se, but while cleaning my friend's pc (Winxp),
when I attempted to delete files I got this message: error
deleting file or folder - cannot delete file: cannot read
from source file or disk. Whaaa? He has one of those
funky little e machines, if that has any bearing. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. imho, I sure like my '98
better! Thanks
