cannot delete an avi file

R

Rene

I tried to use MS Media Player 9 to view CCTV film
compressed into a 4GB avi file by TSCC codec. This did
not work, so:
1. I downloaded a TSCC codec from techsmith.com

2. Then I tried another media player from techsmith
called CamTasia

3. Still no joy, I tried avi splitters from:
Boilsoft.com, Brizsoft.com, Easy Video Splitter from
DoEasier.org

I never have got to see the CCTV film - of someone
stealing my motorcycle!

But now I have another problem:

I tried to delete the avi file using windows explorer but
get the message "cannot delete [filename]: It is being
used by another person or program"

I even tried to do this running in windows safe mode but
got the same message. I also tried a system restore to a
point just before downloading the software and the file
but the system can not restore. I'm using Win XP home.

Any ideas?

Open the avi file with GSpot to determine exactly which codec you need:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ If in doubt, I have found that this one
single codec will play virtually every avi file I can throw at it- ffdshow
codec: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

XP has a known issue regarding deleting large avi files. I hope my
recommendations above will allow you to view the file- once you've done
that, there are a couple of ways to delete the file. Create a new, empty
folder and move the avi file into that folder. Now delete that entire
folder (and its contents!!) If that doesn't work, open Notepad and create
an empty text file- save the file to the same folder as the avi file. In
Windows Explorer, find the text file and highlight it- hold Ctrl and ALSO
highlight the avi file. Delete BOTH files.

Let me know if this works,
Ian.

Yes, it is a known issue but you don't need a 3rd party solution.

As always, edit the registry at your own risk...

1. Start - Run - regedit.exe
2. Locate HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi
3. Delete the "PersistentHandler" subkey
4. Close regedit and you should now be able to delete avi files without
hassle.

I believe this issue has been corrected with SP1; can't remember specific
fix, but with clean SP1 install the issue is no longer present. If not
using SP1 and latest updates, the regedit should work.
