Cannot delete a file

My XP PRO with sp#2 has a file listed in windows explorer named Jost. It cannot be deleted, by
my trying
1. Tried delete
2. Tried deleting from the command prompt both in regular and safe mode.
3. It is FAT 32, so I tried a win 98 startup disk and tried to delete it from DOS.

File remains, saying cannot find file Jost. But it is there in windows explorer.
