"cannot create toolbar"...trying to bring back Quick Launch toolbar

J

jbclem

I'm trying to set up a new profile after my good one became corrupted and disappeared. One problem is that in this new
profile there is no desktop icon in the Quick Launch toolbar. I followed the instructions for creating desktop.scf and
dragged it to my Quick Launch toolbar. That didn't work so I unchecked the Quick Launch toolbar, it disappeared, then I
re-checked it to bring it back. But when I do that I now get an error message(in a small window) that says "cannot
create toolbar".

Not sure what to do about this, does anyone know?

This is the Quick Launch tool bar in the bottom right side of the screen.
Is that what you're refering to that a IE repair might help? I have IE6 and
I just looked but don't see any "repair" menu items. I'll keep looking.

The Show Desktop toolbar is actually provided by Internet Explorer, in
reality, since the release of IE4, Windows Explorer and Internet
Explorer have become an ever growing Gordian Knot!

To repair Internet Explorer go in Add/Remove Programs and find Internet
Explorer in the list and click Uninstall/Remove, you will then see a
dialog box where you will be offered an option to repair IE.

See if this applies to you.

Yes, that's correct. From the Run box;

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

I ran the repair IE and that didn't help. And I just tried the rudll32.exe version (same thing I presume) and chose
restore the previous windows configuration. That brought back the ability to check and show the Quick Launch toolbar.
Only problem is that it has only one icon now, the one I need the least...Internet Explorer launcher.

I really miss that launch desktop icon!

In the Start menu Run box enter the following command and click on OK:

regsvr32 /n /i:U shell32.dll

You can also get to the desktop by pressing the Windows key + D.

You're welcome. If you didn't already yet do it you should probably
reinstall IE6 now, you uninstalled it and reverted to version 5.x when
you restored the previous Windows configuration during your attempted
repair operation.
