Hey people

i have a friend who has a problem with the quick launch toolbar. she is
running XP (not sure if its home or pro).
Her quick launch toolbar seems to have disappeared.
the directory C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
DOES exist
so the http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_toolbar_error.vbs script didnt
work

any ideas how to fix this?? (YES! I HAVE GOOGLED!)

Cheers,

Hobbes

Hi,

right click on the taskbar, choose toolbars from the menu that
appears and select quick launch. what happens. is there any error
message.

yes
the error message is
cannot create toolbar "

ive googled, and there seem to be many other people in this position. some
solutions work for some, and not for others

This same condition happened to me just yesturday. I too have attempted all of these fixes to no avail. Can anyone help???

Same thing happened to me, just about the same time. I still don't
have a solution.

Seems a bit too coincidental. You wouldn't happen to have been
running ZoneAlarm. Mine seemed to coincide with a bad install of the
latest ZoneAlarm.

I've also had this problem for the past 2 days and none of the
solutions have worked for me either. I have had Adaware and Spybot
installed and used them on a daily basis. Yesterday I installed and
ran HijackThis and ran it. Found a couple of things but Quick Launch
still will not work. You can tick the box for it but it goes away and
if you go to toolbars it will tell you "cannot create toolbar". I went
back and did a restore to June 28 and it came back for about 30
seconds and then computer hung and all desktop icons were gone. Had to
press restart to get back on.

I have the same problem - thought it was related to the latest zonealarm update. About the same time my browser got hijacked by allaboutsearching (.com). Seen some posts on lavasoftusa.com (Ad-Aware) indicationg this hijack may be the culpit. Did it come with the ZA update I wonder?

Same happened to me, around the same time, and I don't run zonealarm.

The loss of the quicklaunch toolbar and inability to get it working
corresponded with a browser hijack, possible trojan, and subsequent
cleaning. I'm wondering if there is a specific DLL that controls quick
launch. I'd like to see if it's present.

I was also hijacked about allaboutsearching.com. I think it may have something to do with this. I don't use Zone Alarm at home where I am having this problem but do use it at work. Don't have a problem with the work computer.

"Ditto, Ditto", Ditto". It just seems relly funny that everyone i
getting this same problem. Some bug or something is attacking Window
XP and I can't believe that Window.com has no clue. So is there an
other ideas out there to resolve this problem? I've been runnin
Ad-ware, McAfee with Firewall and run these all weekly. Also ru
SuperCleaner to clear up other junk too!
Boy this is getting old :

This fixed it for me and others.....

In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Name: Userinit

Data: %system32%\wsaupdater.exe,

%system32% represents the path to the System32 folder. For example, if the path is
C:\Windows\System32, then the data would be

C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Instead of wsaupdater.exe, the data should contain userinit.exe,. Using the example above, the data
would be
C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,

Do not forget to add the comma at the end.
Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer. Problem solved.

"Welcome Back Quick Launch Toolbar!"

Ok People here goes and from what I understand this is the silver bullet to the Quick Launch gone missing dilemma

Go to: http://www.criticalnexus.com/resources/

and click on the winxp_cannot_create_toolbar.reg and download the reg file use this regedit to fix your problem and you should be set.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

From what I'm to understand seems that adaware/search & destroy people were overzelous in their registry editing efforts and they helped to remove an essential key

Enjoy!

Wish I could take credit for this, but unfortunately I can't. Koudos to the person that found the fix! Job Well Done!
