"cannot copy ***.sys"

OK, here's the deal:

I got my shiny new computer bits in the week. I've put it
together, but I can't install windows XP on it. Win98
installs fine, but XP won't. When installing, I press F6
to use drivers for my SATA hard drive. Setup then carries
on to the next step, but then coughs up the following:

"Could not copy blahblah.sys

Press enter to retry, Esc to skip....." etc.

I've tried it with several different drivers, and I've
tried both controllers on the mobo (it's an Asus A8V, with
a Via controller in the SBridge, and a Promise 20378
controller elsewhere on the board).

I've been stuck for 2 days now. If anyone has any ideas,
it'd be most helpful.

Cheers!

Oh, the specs are as follows:

Athlon64 3500+ (S. 939)
Asus A8V Deluxe mobo
1Gb DDR ram
HIS Excalibur Radeon X800 Pro VIVO
Sony CDRW
Maxtor 160Gb SATA HDD

SATA drive,as in 1.You dont need the SATA drivers if youre only
useing the 1,on a RAID set,you do,and you'd need to configure this
in the BIOS,chk to boot RAID configuration. If you have a RAID set,
are both drives shown in the configuration on post-boot.
