Cannot Control Volume

I have XP Professional installed (company upgrade) and every now and again,
while listening to a cd or mp3, my volume control goes to 0. I slide it back
up and it goes back down. Sometimes I can go all day and it works fine,
sometimes no matter what I do, I can't keep the slider up. My IT department
is at a loss and frankly, so am I.

My guess would be that you have some sort of input device with volume
controls on it. Primary guess would be a keyboard with special buttons (I
have volume controls on mine), but could be monitor or speakers or something
else (its amazing where they can stick buttons these days). This device is
either being bumped or pressed against something. We have keyboard trays
where I work that slide under the desk and the top rows of keys are always
getting caught and pressed inadvertently (sometimes with interesting effects)

If only it were that simple. No, while I do have that kind of keyboard (no
other input devices that would control volume), the problem is there when the
keyboard is in the middle of my desk (touching nothing) and if I hold the
volume up button, the sound still tries to turn down. Whatever this is, it
is not hardware related, but rather a software issue - that is about the only
thing I am sure of at this point. Thanks for your input though!
