Cannot connect via wireless

K

Running Vista Business 32 bit RTM with all critical updates installed.
I can connect to unsecured wireless networks, but cannot make a
connection to the wpa-psk-aes secured network at work. The WAP is a
Linksys WAP54g, which linksys says is vista compatible. We have flashed
it with the latest firmware. The machine is a fujitsu Lifebook T4220
and it has an Intel 4965agn wireless card. We have several XP laptops
that connect to the WAP, so I think the WAP is working fine. Vista can
see the wireless network, but says, "The settings saved on this computer
for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I have
also tried the kb935222 update, but that did not fix my problem.

Another strange symptom I notice is that when I run an IPconfig /all in
order to verify the MAC address of the wireless card is entered
correctly into the WAP, it only lists my ethernet connections, not my
wireless.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

You can use "Linksys Easy-Link Advisor" utility - at Linksys website or on
the web.
I would look into the router settings, Wireless Security menu; depending on
the setup, only listed MAC's might be allowed to connect. Alternatively,
save the settings of the router and play with the security settings till you
can connect. See also if you can connect via a cat5/6 cable to the
router/Internet.

Yes, that is how it is setup, but I ran ipconfig /all from the command
prompt to check for the 10th time that we have the MAC address entered
correctly. Now the wireless is not even listed in the ipconfig /all
output. Any idea what causes this problem?

I can't do this as it is just a WAP, not a router with ethernet ports on it.

Thanks for the reply.

Check Device Manager to see if your network device is listed and working
properly.

Yes, it is listed and it says "This device is working properly".
Wireless is also turned on on the laptop. Thanks for the reply. Can
you think of anything else?

Have you installed the V.4 version of the software? Check on Linksys for
your adaptor and take note of the Vista information.

Have you right-clicked the adapter for its properties in Network Connections
via Network and Sharing?

Amen. Give it a good 45-second off reboot.

Don't know why, but occasionally Vista machines show Limited Connectivity
while all XP machines surf. We have 50 to 75 various machines running off
two Belkin N1 routers. A long reboot is the only cure. Didn't used to be
this way though.

Yes, is there something specific I should be looking for here that you
recommend? The settings in the network connection properties are all
the defaults except I've tried turning off IPv6.

Thanks guys for your input. Unfortunately after leaving the Vista
machine off for a while (~45 min), then power back on and try to
connect, it's still not connecting. I'm still open to suggestions if
you can think of anything else to suggest.

The TCP/IP protocol v4, the wireless client, if required. Last step before
you run and jump out the window, uninstall the adapter, reboot and let
windows discover and reinstall the adapter, if you haven't already...jumped
out the window I mean.

Perhaps the extraordinary steps you have taken to mask your IP address to
elude detection of any kind has left you an unverifiable entity invisible to
all but the unprotected. He he he

Hi Colin and thanks for your reply. I have checked the Linksys site at
your recommendation, and did a search on my wireless card, but I find
nothing for a WAP54g. I have gone through about a dozen suggestions in
posts there for problems connecting to other wireless devices from
Vista, but no joy. Version 4 of what software? Thanks again. :)

Thanks for your response. I gave this a try. All I seem to get is an
error message 'Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation'
when I try to connect using that software.

That unique error message (which seems like some kind of archaic role
playing reference, lol) I am pursuing in the Linksys forums right now.
Can you ping your router from Vista?

Yes, I can ping the WAP. I'm open to any other advice you may have.
Thanks again.

Now that I look at

I see I confused this WAP with an older one that I am using. Sorry for the
confusion. Of course there is only v1 software for yours.

I wasn't clear. Sorry. I meant, leave the router & modem off a long bit
before switching back on. Vista computers here then connect.
