I just upgraded my laptop to XP Pro. I had some problems in my home
networking. So I disconnected the whole setup and I have my laptop directly
connected to my ADSL modem. ISP says that ADSL modem is working fine and
connecting to the internet without any problems. I am even able to configure
the modem from my web browser.

The modem seems to be assigning ip address to my laptops NIC. When I do a
ipconfig /all. I can see that it has assigned a synamic ip address. All other
settings like DHCP server, DNS server seems to be fine. TCP/IP settings seem
to be OK.

But even then when O open my browser and try to conenct directly through the
internet nothing works. What could be the problem? I am going crazy. Please
help.

Provide ipconfig information for your laptop, as a start.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.

From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

Do you have a personal firewall on your laptop? Please don't connect to the
internet for even a minute, without either a personal firewall or a NAT router.
