Cannot connect to POP3 server on my login but can on another

Hi,

I'm getting a strange message in both Outlook and Outlook Express.
Basically, I'm trying to connect to my POP3 internet email server. I can
ping the server no problem so there is connectivity. I get this error:

The server responded with an error. Account: 'ACCOUNTNAME', Server:
'pop.SERVER', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server:
Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

I have spelt the server correctly and the account details are entered
correctly.

On this same computer, using a different login, my wife *can* connect to the
same POP3 server! I've checked every service that running under her and my
accounts and they are the same.

Why does it work when she is logged on, but not for me?

We're using Windows XP Home.
Thanks,
Alain

Any chance you are not using Clear Text? See if this article applies:
You receive error 0x800ccc90 or error 0x800ccc18 when you try to log on to
Exchange Server by using Secure Password Authentication:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;198704

Are you using an antivirus program set to scan incoming email? If so,
disable that option in your antivirus program and see if that fixes it.

You need to disable AVG email scan of incoming & outgoing mail. It serves no
purpose.

Check the name of your server also>OE>tools>accounts>select
account>properties>server.

Turn off AVG's mail proxy.

Oops, replied to wrong post (must've clicked on the wrong thread).
Apolegizing here since it is unlikely that the Cancel will be honored by
the Microsoft NNTP server (if it is then this post should also
disappear).

It will remain for those who have viewed it. Others won't see it.

Actually it will remain if Microsoft's NNTP server doesn't honor cancel
posts submitted to the control.cancel group. Even if the group exists,
the NNTP server may or may not honor those cancel requests (because they
can be abused by malcontents that submit forged cancel posts).

Or maybe you meant that a copy would remain in the user's local cache
(database file) after they yanked a copy even if later the cancel were
honored. Yep, can't do anything about that; however, for OE, I believe
it will sync with the NNTP server with the result that the post gets
red-lined and the preview area says the post is no longer available if
it had indeed been cancelled.

I really don't think Microsoft's NNTP server honors cancels. But we're
heading off into a side-topic here. I just erred on thinking one post
was selected when I replied when, in fact, a different adjacent post was
selected. It happens, especially when you get distracted.
