Cannot boot Windows 2000 after Windows Update (Nvidia problem)?

Hey Folks, a UNIX guy here, and I need some help. What happened was I
was trying to get USB 2.0 support to work on my system (Dell Dimension
4550 - Service Pack 4), and I already had nVidia's own driver working
to get my display mode to what I wanted.

I accidently hit "install" for everything when the Windows Update came
up - and it had it's own nVidia driver. Now, it boots up and I get the
Win 2000 screen, but then the screen goes blank and cannot recover.

Can someone point me to the right steps that I need to do to undo
this? I think I will need to boot off the original Win 2000 CD, but
again, I'm a UNIX guy so I'm a tad clueless and I apologize.

Thanks,
JD

For starters, try booting into Safe Mode, by pressing F8
during the boot phase. This would allow you to selectively
disable various drivers, using msconfig.exe from here:

When you say blank at what point?

Does this help at all?

When I mean "blank screen", basically it boots up and I see the
Windows 2000 splash screen and then it goes black after that.

I tried the Safe Mode and was able to re-install the nVidia driver and
it appears to work now. It's a dumb move on my part to not read
everything when I was doing the Windows update. So thanks for
everyone's help.

The last problem I have is that I cannot force Windows 2000 to detect
that I have USB 2.0 as it only says "Standard USB" instead of Enhanced
USB and from what I've read SP4 is supposed to take care of that but I
still am having issues. I don't see anything in the BIOS either.

Thanks again for helping this poor UNIX guy! :)
