Cannot boot to Windows XP Home SP2 Disc

The steps I take and what happens:

Insert Disc.
Restart.
Press the "Any Key" too boot to the CD.
I get a message(not exact): Checking your current hardware configuration...
About 2 seconds later it goes blank and stays that way. I even tried seeing
if it was just slow and left it for an hour(didnt expect it to work.. but i
still tried)

Safe mode: I load all the .sys files and as soon as it starts to load the
desktop it restarts on its own.

Some history on this:

I ran Smitfraudfix.exe as a suggestion from tech support. It then claimed a
regedit dll was missing. When I rebooted, I got a message that AUTOCHK was
missing, I then got a BSOD. When I tried to restart in safe mode, it will
load the sys files and restart on its own.

I was also wondering if I could recover any files before I reinstall
Windows(if I can even do that).

Nate,
I hope somebody can shed light on this. I had *exactly* the same
problem. After multiple attempts, I gave up and resorted to my
IBM supplied recovery CDs. For the last attempt, I walked away
and let the black (blank) screen persist until morning.

Is this a retail purchased CD?
Is this an OEM CD? If so, was it delivered WITH that computer?

Do you have the original CD or a copy of the CD? Assuming you have an
original:
-- With Power off: Disconnect all peripherals; printers, scanners, etc;
everything but the mouse, monitor and keyboard.
Try it again.

IF it's a copy of an original or an OEM from another computer, CD you're
probably SOL.

Safe mode? If you're booting windows and can go to Safe mode, then you are
NOT booted from the CD somehow. When you boot from the CD, you should not
see windows start.
In case something is mixed up, there are many self-restarts during hte
process of a reinstall.

That has nothign to do with booting from the CD and reinstalling.

Yes. Copy them or use ntbackup or any backup utility to get your data
backed up. Don't forget favorites and your email files. Favorites is a
folder under your name, and emails have the .dbx extension so when you find
that you've found the right folder to back up.
