Cannot boot from Win Xp SP2 CD

In trying to install the complete system from a CD that has XP Home including
SP2 on it my computer freezes after I respond to the "Hit any key to boot
from CD" statement. I've replaced the CD Drive, talked to the motherboard
technicians, changed settings in the BIOS without solving the problem. I use
Roxio's drag-to-disc program, which I may uninstall as the next thing I'll
try. I also need the boot capability to restore my files using my backup
program. Any comments which could shed some light on this dark issue would be
appreciated.

It has to be a hardware/bios issue since no operating system is involved at
this point. (assumes you've ruled out a damaged disk) Try another operating
system CD-Rom.

Thanks alot Dave.
I have been trying to have Microsoft send me a new XP SP2 Home CD without
any luck. Do you or anyone know how I can do that without having to pay for
the system again?

If it is a non-oem CD-Rom you can just borrow one from someone.

You do not pay the full price of a new Windows XP operating system.
Note: A shipping and handling charge will be assessed on your order.

Your problem has nothing to do with Roxio drag-to-disk or any other
windows-level program, nor the currently installed operating system. It has
to do with BIOS settings and/or hardware.

Try a simple test or two:

1. Set the boot order to (1) floppy, (2) CD, (3) internal hard drive.

2. Insert a win98 or ME floppy, warm boot, and verify that you get a DOS
prompt. Note that you can download a win98SE floppy image form
www.bootdisk.com. If this works, then your PC is basically OK, and you have
successfully changed the boot order, at least in this one case. If not,
keep playing with the BIOS settings. Reading the MB manual might help.
Also, if you get a floppy image with generic CD support, you can use it to
test the CD drive by seeing whether you can read a CD, even a music CD.
From the DOS prompt, just change to the CD drive (you have to guess the
letter, D: or higher is likely; possibly C: is the hard driv eis not
detected by DOS.) Then, type DIR. If you can not read the CD, chekc the
CDROM power and signal cables. If necessary, connect the CDROM to a
different IDE controller, or replace the CDROM.

3. Remove the floppy, and insert an different bootable CD, and warm boot.
For example, any win98, ME, XP, many Norton, McAfee, KNOPPIX (free LINUX on
CD), etc. If the PC boots, immediately cancel out and remove the CD. If
not, play with the BIOS some more.

If you can read other CDs (from DOS) and boot from other CDs, but not from
the XP CD, then you really do need a new XP CD. However, that is unlikely,
unless the CD has been damaged, such as severly scratched, and that should
be obvious to the naked eye under a strong light.
