cannot assign drive letter

a friend of mine recently built a new machine using XPproSP2

upon putting the correctly jumperd drive from his old machine
into the new one (to tansfer data)
there is *no* option in disk management to assign a drive letter (it's
greyed out)
the drive is seen as formatted NTFS (at it's full size)

we took the drive out and put it in my own machine which dual boots XP and
Win2k
and when booting to XP the same thing happened.
the drive is recognized fine by disk management...but there is *no* option
to assign
a drive letter

booting over to win2k ...disk mangement has no problem assigning a drive
letter...
and all the data is there as expected.
however even after assingning a drive letter in win2k
booting back to XP results in the original problem.

since my machine can accept up to three removable drives...
we were eventually able to transfer the data...all from within win2k

but surely the situation with XP not being able to assign a drive letter
does not make any sense to me...
we did try other drives in his machine and they were all recognized normally

problem was apparently caused by a utility called Go Back
which changed the partition label!
